NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Interstate 10 has been named among the deadliest roads in the country, and the portion of I-10 that runs through New Orleans is the deadliest stretch of the entire 2,460-mile highway.

Financial website ValuePenguin released a report called the 50 Most Dangerous Roads in America. I-10, which runs from Southern California to Florida, is No. 4, and the “deadliest” city on I-10 is New Orleans, according to the report.

“All in all, there are 2.7 million miles of road in the U.S.– enough to go around the Earth 107.2 times,” the report says. “Not every road has a great safety record though. Some are simply more dangerous than others.”

The interstate is also the second-darkest highway in America. I-10 ranks fourth for having the highest number of drunk drivers on the road.

The report studied the fatality analysis reporting system of the National Traffic and Highway Safety Administration, using accident data from 2011-2015 and counting the number of fatal accidents and non-fatal on every highway in the U.S. for those four years.
