JEFFERSON PARISH (WGNO) – Jefferson Parish investigators are looking for the men who carjacked a mother and her 14-year-old daughter near Old Metairie as neighbors grow more alert in an area they say has always been safe.

“They came over here looking for a phone,” says 74-year-old Wayne Higgins.

Higgins has lived on Bonnabel Boulevard in Metairie for 30 years, but this past Saturday was unlike any other.

“My girlfriend and I were talking to the cat, playing with the cat and the doorbell rang. I went to the door and she said we’ve been robbed, and I made her repeat it. She said we’ve been robbed and I told my girlfriend to call the police,” says Higgins, “They were in terrible shape. They were all upset. Well, you can imagine, some guys put a gun to your head.”

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office says a 39-year-old woman and her 14-year-old daughter were traveling on Bonnabel when two men jumped in front of their black Chevy Cobalt asking for help. It was just before 10 p.m.

Higgins says the Cobalt pulled over just footsteps from his home behind a green Ford Explorer.

Investigators say the men were armed, one with a semi-automatic handgun, and the other with a rifle. They say the two victims were ordered out and onto the ground while four men jumped into the Cobalt leaving the Explorer behind.

“It’s a really safe area generally, like we never really thought anything like that would happen over here and it was definitely unexpected,” says Isabel Sbeiti.

48 hours later several neighbors are still in shock and now on guard in a part of town they thought was practically immune to crime.

“It’s a crazy world that we live in and for something like this to happen in Metairie i just don’t believe it,” says Metairie resident Big Lee.

Big Lee says his surveillance cameras caught the men as they backed the cobalt down Bonnabel towards I-10. Eventually one man gets out to seemingly to survey the car and cautiously drives off after a deputies arrives on scene.

“You have to be careful with everything. It’s a shame to say this, but you can hardly trust anyone anymore,” says Higgins.

Deputies are looking for a 2008, 4-door, black Chevrolet Cobalt with Louisiana license plate WTM-308.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office says they are processing the green Explorer that was left behind at the scene. They say it has not been reported stolen.
