Schools, governments across South Louisiana close Wednesday as winter weather moves in

METAIRIE, La. — School systems and government offices across South Louisiana are closed Wednesday as frigid winter weather moves across the area.

Most parish and city governments, along with criminal and district courts, are closed because of a hard freeze warning.

According to the National Weather Service, the greater New Orleans metro is under a winter weather advisory until midnight.

A bitter, cold hard freeze warning will be in effect from 6 p.m. until noon Wednesday for most of the viewing area, except for coastal Louisiana parishes.

There’s a wind chill advisory from 9 p.m. until 11 a.m. Wednesday. Wind chills could be as cold as 9 degrees.

The high on Wednesday is expected to be 37 degrees.

Following are school and college closures for Wednesday:

The Jefferson Parish Public School System will close on Wednesday, January 17, as a precaution, officials said this afternoon.

All after-school care, tutoring, athletic events, practices, and any other extra-curricular activities in Jefferson Parish have also been called off this afternoon.

The St. Tammany Parish School System will also close tomorrow.

“Due to potential winter weather conditions, all after-school activities have been canceled for Tuesday afternoon, and schools and school system offices will be closed Wednesday, January 17th,” according to a Facebook post by the STPSS.

Lake Castle Slidell Private School will also close tomorrow.

All public school will also be closed in Washington Parish, Tangipahoa, St. John the Baptist and St. Bernard Parish tomorrow, according to school officials.

All archdiocesan schools in Washington, St. Tammany, and Jefferson Parishes will also close tomorrow.

All Orleans Parish public schools will be closed Wednesday.

All St. Charles Parish public schools and offices will be closed Wednesday, January 17, 2018. In addition, all district and after-school activities for Tuesday and Wednesday are canceled.

Classes and activities at all Delgado Community College locations except the Maritime, Radar and Industrial Training Facility will be suspended at 3 p.m. Tuesday, January 16.

The University of Holy Cross will shut down at 4 p.m. Tuesday and will remain closed Wednesday.

Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) will close at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018 and remain closed Wednesday.

St. Martin’s Episcopal School will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Louisiana Schools for the Deaf and Visually Impaired (LSDVI) will be closed Wednesday.

Jefferson RISE Charter School will be closed Wednesday.

Herzing University has canceled classes after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Riverside Academy in Reserve is closed Wednesday.

University of New Orleans is closed Wednesday.

Xavier University is closed until noon Wednesday.

Isidore Newman School is closed Wednesday.

Loyola University’s campus is closed Wednesday.

New Orleans Job Corps Center is closed Wednesday.

Country Day is closed Wednesday.

Nicholls State University is closed Wednesday.
