NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A petition is calling for Mayor Mitch Landrieu to resign as the mayor of New Orleans. The petition also asks for the historical statues and monuments to stay standing.

The page says, “The removal of Historical statues and monuments is an unnecessary, idiotic action to take over actions of one insane member of society.” The petition currently has over 1,800 supporters.

The petition is most likely a reaction to Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s announcement last week to relocate four prominent Confederate monuments in New Orleans.

This isn’t the first controversy to stem from that announcement. Another petition on directly opposes mayor Landrieu’s viewpoint saying, “We strongly believe that any such talk or action would be irrevocably detrimental to bridging any gap between our fellow New Orleanians.”

About 15,000 supporters have signed that petition.
