NOPD Officer shot and killed at New Orleans East apartment complex early Friday morning

NEW ORLEANS – A New Orleans  Police Officer was shot and killed early Friday morning when he exchanged gunfire with suspect at the Cindy Place apartments in New Orleans East.

The shooting happened just before 12:30 a.m.

The officer was transported to University Medical Center, where he died.

According to NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison, the officer, who was a member of the 7th District, also shot the suspect, who retreated into a nearby apartment and was eventually captured by an NOPD S.W.A.T. team and transported to University Medical Center in unknown condition.

Superintendent Harrison declined to identify the deceased officer at this time.

He said he is waiting for all family members to be notified of the officers’ death.

Officers from the NOPD, State Police, ATF and DEA were all on the scene.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu was also at this morning’s media briefing and offered his condolences to the deceased officer’s family as well as the Superintendent and the department.
