NEW ORLEANS EAST (WGNO) - One suspect is dead and two more suspects involved in an armed robbery at a Dollar General in New Orleans East are in custody.

The NOPD responded to an armed robbery in progress at Dollar General, 10600 Chef Hwy around 9:50 p.m. Tuesday night. After a brief shootout with police, one suspect was injured. He died on the scene. A weapon was found near his body. Two other suspects fled.

As many as 100 officers, K-9 officers, and the New Orleans SWAT team searched for the suspects near Chef Menteur Highway and Read Blvd., New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said Wednesday.

The second suspect was found by police near the scene overnight.

The third suspect was turned in by his mother Wednesday morning, Landrieu added.

A bag containing $2,000 was also recovered near the scene.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been identified as officer Clifford Thompson and officer Joshua Carthon.

Thompson is a 7-year veteran of the NOPD and Carthon is a 6-year veteran of the NOPD, according to police. They are both on administrative reassignment pending the outcome of the investigation -- which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.

They were both most recently assigned to the NOPD 7th District.
