NEW ORLEANS - An NOPD officer was involved in a shootout with a suspect after a traffic stop in Gentilly this afternoon.

The shooting was reported just after 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Arts and New York Streets, according to the NOPD.

NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said the shooting began when an officer attempted to pull over a vehicle for a traffic stop near the intersection of Painters Street and Robert E. Lee Boulevard.

"The vehicle came to a stop in the 6300 block of Painters," Ferguson said. "The driver did comply at that time, but then the driver got out of the vehicle and walked to the 6400 block of Painters."

The officer followed the suspect and ordered him to stop, Ferguson said, and the situation escalated into a confrontation.

During that confrontation, the officer and the suspect exchanged gunfire.

The officer was not injured, according to Ferguson.
