VENICE, La. (WGNO) – Deputies in Plaquemines Parish have arrested a Mississippi man in connection with the parish’s first homicide since 2014.

According to the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office, the body of a middle-aged Asian man, later identified as 48-year-old Tao Dinh Nguyen, was found floating about 7:15 a.m. Aug. 3 in Pass Tante Phine/Sugar Lake Bayou.

His cause of death was blunt force trauma.

Tam Thanh Ta, 44, of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, is the man accused of killing Nguyen. He worked with Nguyen on a 60-foot shrimp trawl boat that’s based in Biloxi, Mississippi. Deputies said Nguyen was the captain of the boat.

Ta was booked into the Plaquemines Parish Jail for second-degree murder. He was already being held on an outstanding warrant in Mississippi and traffic violations in Plaquemines Parish. He’s being held without bond.
