NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A contractor narrowly survived when a house under construction came crashing down.

Firefighters responded to the collapse at the home on Upperline and Annunciation.

Meljen Portillo and his crew were working on stabilizing the structure during the storm when fierce winds caused it to buckle.

Portillo says they were able to escape just seconds before it collapsed.

“We got halfway down to the end of the front of the end of the door when I heard the thing coming down. We decided to run out of here,” says Portillo.

The New Orleans Fire Department arrived on scene shortly after the home collapsed.  A room in the house next door suffered some damage.

No one was inside at the time.
