NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – There is new information on what may have contributed to the death of a bicyclist killed by a train. The NOPD reports the man found dead Wednesday next to his mangled bike along the railroad tracks by Leake Ave., was wearing headphones.

They are not saying this is why he died and are still unclear if the man was hit by the train while it was still dark out.

Dr. Rachel Retain says the surge in portable electronics causing sensory deprivation is the reason more and more pedestrians and bikers wearing headphones are getting killed, “That must have been really loud not to hear a train coming. You really need to have your total focus.”

Retain says compromising awareness by cranking volume too high is easy to prevent, “Put one in so can have hearing out of the other ear or turn the music down so that you can see outside noises.”

The latest studies show injuries to pedestrians listening to headphones, has more than tripled in the past ten years.
