NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)- There's a new and free way to exercise that's making its way to our New Orleans neighborhoods.

News with a Twist Reporter Kenny Lopez takes a look at FitLot.

Adam Mejerson, Executive Director of FitLot has a vision, a healthy vision for all of New Orleans.

"Bringing fitness parks to empty lots in New Orleans seems like a natural fit,"  he said.

Mejerson basically grew up in a gym.  His dad was an exercise physiologist.  Public health has always stuck with him. That's why he decided to start up FitLot.

"FitLot is a non-profit that's dedicated to build outdoor fitness parks across New Orleans that are safe and accessible to everyone,"  he said.

Mejerson wants to use this outdoor park in City Park built by the Trust for Public Land as a model for what future FitLots will be like in the coming years.

"Right now, we're working to build our flagship fitness park in the Treme at  the Sojourner Truth Center along the Lafitte Greenway," Mejerson said.

His vision is clear, build FitLots in neighborhoods from the lake to the river, provide accessible fitness for everyone.

"People can go outside their homes, walk less than 5 minutes, and find an outdoor fitness park in their own neighborhood.  New Orleans has quite a number of health challenges.  Parks like FitLot will make it a lot easier to get out there and be more active," he said.

The best part is they will be free.  No gym memberships, no intimidation.  Just you and nature.

Every Tuesday and Thursday they even have Coach Brown, a local firefighter/EMT offer free group training at the outdoor park in City Park.

"When you come out here and you take the walls off the gym, it makes the whole thing more natural and more fun," Mejerson said.

FitLot is currently in the final stretch of their crowdfunding campaign to help build the FitLots.  So far they've raised 22-thousand dollars of their 35-thousand dollar goal.  There are 6 more days left in the crowdfunding campaign.  There are various ways you can help donate.

Friends of the Lafitte Greenway are matching all donations made to FitLot today and tomorrow.
