NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A new television series will explore the seedy side of French Quarter history.

The series will be based on the book The French Quarter: An Informal History of the New Orleans Underworld, by Herbert Asbury, according to industry watcher Deadline Hollywood.

Vermillion Entertainment and Rubicon Entertainment, which are both based in Louisiana, will develop and produce the series.

This isn’t the first book by Asbury to get the Hollywood treatment. His book Gangs of New York inspired the 2002 Martin Scorsese movie of the same name.

The French Quarter focuses on the history of the Quarter from the days of Jean Lafitte all the way up to modern politics. Asbury’s The Barbary Coast, the third entry in the informal book series, focuses on the early days of San Francisco.

Barbary Coast is also set to become a television series, according to Deadline.
