MANDEVILLE, La. (WGNO) – A former Fontainebleau High School math teacher and girls’ basketball coach has been arrested on numerous charges for having a sexual relationship with a student, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.
In June, STPSO received an anonymous complaint from a concerned adult that 37-year-old, William Leto, was allegedly having inappropriate sexual relations with one of his female students. Detectives with the STPSO immediately started their investigation into the allegation and determined that the complaints were legitimate.
The investigation led detectives to discover that Leto initially made inappropriate contact through social media. During an interview, the student told detectives that she and Leto did have sexual contact on multiple different occasions.
Sheriff Randy Smith says, “It’s bad enough when someone takes advantage of a child. It’s even worse when it’s a person of trust, in this case, a teacher. We will not tolerate this in our community, and anyone who thinks it’s OK, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
At this stage of the investigation, Leto is being charged with: four counts of Molestations of a Juvenile by an Educator and one count of Computer Aided Solicitation of a Juvenile. As the investigation continues, Leto could face additional charges.
“The safety of students is the highest priority of the St. Tammany Parish Public School System. We took immediate action as soon as we learned of the allegations,” said STPPS Superintendent W. L. “Trey” Folse, III. “We do everything possible to maintain safety in our schools, including extensive background checks and fingerprinting for every employee. Employees are not allowed to communicate with students through social media and we encourage anyone with information about these allegations to contact the Sheriff’s Office.”
