AMITE, La. (WGNO) — Authorities are on the scene of a fatal crash in Amite.

The Amite Fire Chief says a truck stalled over the tracks near Highway 51 and Pope Lane. An Amtrak train with 171 passengers on board collided with the truck.

Police confirm the driver of the truck died.

The passengers on the train were evacuated and taken to the Greater Refuge Temple Ministries, 4 blocks away.

Amite Fire Chief Bruce Cutrer says the train was headed to New Orleans from Chicago.  Two passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.

The remaining passengers were loaded on Greyhound buses to be taken to their final destinations.
