JACKSON, La. (WGNO) – About 80 flood-affected pets being housed in a mobile pet shelter at the Baton Rouge River Center have been moved to a state prison in Jackson about 45 minutes away. According to the state Department of Agriculture, the Dixon Correctional Institute in Jackson has a shelter where pets are placed in the care of inmate trusties. It was built in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and is often used in disasters, The state transferred 45 dogs and 34 cats to the prison. All of the animals are displaced from the recent floods. Their owners are staying in shelters where pets aren’t allowed. Starting today, pet owners who want to see their pets at the prison can take a free shuttle from the Baton Rouge River Center at 9 a.m. daily. The state will also help evacuees reunite with their pets after they leave the shelter.
