Marrero, LA (WGNO)– A teenager returned to her family home after a hunting trip Sunday, to make a horrifying discovery.  Jefferson Parish detectives say her step-father had stabbed to death her mother and her two younger brothers, before dying of a drug overdose.

The victims were found in the home at 4805 Brandi Street in Marrero.  They have been identified as 46-year-old David Mata, 40-year-old Kelli Mata, four-year old Liam Mata, and two-year old Caden Mata.  Detectives say the adults were found dead in the living room, and the boys were found dead in their bedrooms.

While the Jefferson Parish Coroner says his office is waiting for a toxicology report, Sheriff’s Office spokesman, Col. John Fortunato, confirmed for WGNO that David Mata had stabbed himself but died of a drug overdose.

At a vigil Sunday night outside the home, neighbors gathered and prayed with Pastor Kenneth Antoine, who told them that in their grief they “should not try to answer senseless questions” about any possible motive.

Friends of the teenage girl, identified as 18-year old Jordan Mata, were in shock.

Kourtney Schouest said she had been at the Mata home for a birthday party last week. “Miss Kelli had a smile..they were all happy,” she said.

Alannah Rettley described herself as Jordan Mata’s best friend, and said she used to play with Jordan’s little brothers.  The family was “so happy,” Rettley said, “never sad.”
