COVINGTON, La. (WGNO) – September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and in an effort to get more men screened, Pints for Prostates is teaming up with dozens of breweries across America, including Abita Brewing Company on the North Shore.

“In our case, we decided to put the crowns on our Big Easy IPA, which we just launched this year,” says Jaime Jurado, director of brewery operations at Abita.

The crowns, or bottle caps, have the pints for prostates logo designed to encourage men to learn more about the importance of regular health screenings.

“I know a number of brewers, including Steve Anderson, a good friend of mine, who passed away right before Christmas in Texas. He owns a brewery, never got himself checked and died,” says Jurado.

The National Cancer Institute estimates roughly 233,000 new prostate cancer cases are diagnosed each year in the U.S. and Pints for Prostates attempts to reach men through the universal language of beer.

“Big Easy IPA is lower alcohol, easier drinking, ‘sessionable,’ you’re going to have more than one probably if we’ve done our job right,” says Jurado.

The bottle caps have printed messages on the back too that say things like “get tested” and “survivors drink more beer.”

It’s yet another incentive for men to raise a glass or two and get tested.

Touro Infirmary will be hosting their annual Pints for Prostates event at NOLA Brewing  on Thursday, Sept. 22nd from 5:30 to 8 p.m.  Guests will get two pints of NOLA Brewing beer, food from McClure’s BBQ, a souvenir event pint glass, and prostate health information.
