NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The Eiffel Society was the scene for some Friday Night Fever. The disco ball was spinning, the go-go boots were out in full force, and people were grooving for a good cause.

The fundraiser was held for Upturn Arts, a program that inspires youth with after-school and summer camp programs that inspire creativity and build confidence. Last year, 340 kids benefited from the program.

Dana Reed is the executive director and founder of Upturn Arts.

“Something very unique about our program is that we offer a sliding scale fee, so parents pay based on their income. We have a large diversity of students that come from all over New Orleans,” says Reed.

Young disco queens and kings filled the dance floor, Twist reporter Stephanie Oswald learned a dance step or two, and Twist anchor LBJ was master of ceremonies.

Disco for Dance attendee Katie Boden says she was thrilled to contribute an event that inspires so many kids.

“We always do the museum or the zoo but this is something else! We can dance with our kids and have a really good time,” says Boden.

The Disco Amigos Dance Troupe is one reason the event has been “Stayin’ Alive” for four years in a row.

“It’s all about freedom of expression and creativity and collaboration, and that’s what the Disco Amigos are as well, so we love to help them out,” explains Amigo Jerry Lenaz. He’s also on the board for Upturn Arts.

The event raised $55,000 toward camp scholarships last year, and Reed says she’s hoping this year’s dancing fest will double that number.
