St. Bernard deputy injured, suspect killed in Chalmette

CHALMETTE, La. (WGNO) – A man is dead and a St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s deputy was taken to the hospital for injuries suffered Tuesday afternoon during an altercation.

The Louisiana State Police are investigating the incident which happened near St. Bernard Highway and Gallow Drive.

Authorities say the deputy was hit in the head several times with an unknown object. During the struggle the deputy called for backup.

The suspect was the shot and died at the scene. At least three officers showed up on the scene to assist their colleague who was in danger.

The deputy was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay.

Police could not confirm whether the deadly bullet was fired by the first officer on the scene or one of the officers who arrived for back-up.
