Coroner identifies man stabbed to death inside SUV in the Lower 9th Ward



On Friday, June 11, the New Orleans Coroner identified the victim in this incident as 30-year-old Andrew Mercadel.

According to the coroner, the preliminary cause of death is sharp force injuries, consistent with the stab wounds the victim received.

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — On Wednesday morning, the NOPD began investigating a homicide in the Lower 9th Ward.

The NOPD sent out an official press release around 3:00 p.m. with a change of address for this incident.

Detectives say the victim was stabbed in the 5400 block of N. Villere Street. The victim then traveled by SUV across the Claiborne Avenue Bridge, until the vehicle came to a stop at the base of the bridge.

The initial call came in shortly before 11:00 a.m.

Officer responded to the intersection of Poland and Claiborne Avenues, where they discovered a body seated inside an SUV.

The SUV was stopped at the foot of the westbound lanes of the Claiborne Avenue Bridge, near Poland Avenue.

According to the NOPD, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
