MARRERO, La. (WGNO) – The mother of a 5-year-old boy who was accidentally shot Tuesday night at a home in Marrero has been charged with one count of misdemeanor child desertion, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office confirms.

29-year-old Generra Brown was given a misdemeanor summons. She was not arrested.

Her 5 and 9-year-old sons were playing in a closet at their home on Fernando Court when they found a semi-automatic handgun. The older brother accidently fired the gun striking the younger brother in the head.

The 5-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Melvin Brady.

The boys were home alone when the shooting happened. Brown was across the street taking care of an elderly neighbor.
