Louisiana ranks among top 10 states for women entrepreneurs

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Thumbtack, an online services marketplace recently put together a report on the best places for women to start a business in 2016 and Louisiana ranked number seven.

The Thumbtack group surveyed 20,557 women from January to June 2016 who own small businesses and perhaps surprisingly, the top ten states were in the South. Mississippi, Georgia and Virginia were the top three overall:

  1. Mississippi
  2. Georgia
  3. Virginia
  4. Kentucky
  5. Tennessee
  6. Alabama
  7. Louisiana
  8. Missouri
  9. Michigan
  10. Utah

According to Thumbtack, women owned more than 9 million businesses nationwide and recent data from SCORE, a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, show women-owned businesses are growing 1.5 times faster than the national average.

The U.S. Census Bureau report shows women represent 40 percent of small business owners with 64 percent reporting that their business is their primary means of employment. -not a side job making extra money.

Thumbtack also rated the top ten cities for women entrepreneurs:

  2. Chattanooga, TN
  3. Birmingham, AL
  4. Richmond, VA
  5. Lakeland, FL
  6. Fayetteville, NC
  7. Asheville, NC
  8. Atlanta, GA
  9. Portland, ME
  10. Virginia Beach, VA
