Bayou Classic Helps Downtown Holiday Season Economic Push

Christmas isn’t a huge tourist season for new Orleans but put a football under the Christmas tree and the hotels start filling up!

Sports tourism could help the city finish strong!

This year’s Bayou Classic is a land mark year for the Grambling State Southern University football rivalry.

The weekend’s flagship performance keeping fans close to stores and restaurants is the annual Battle of the Bands and Step Show.

A growing list of activities surrounding the Bayou Classic like the step show, are  designed to keep people downtown spending money.

And before 2013 is over,  the city will host the New Orleans Bowl, which pits the Sun Belt Conference against Conference USA.

The Bayou Classic brings in about two hundred thousand out of Towner’s, pushing the hotel occupancy rate up to 90%.

The combined weekend of sport activities surrounding the Bayou Classic brings in  close to $50 million dollars of economic impact.

next month`s New Orleans bowl up to $25 million.
