There’s a new whiskey on the market that is distilled, bottled and served in Thibodaux. The creators of this one claim to be making history. WGNO News Anchor Vanessa Bolano checks it out.

It’s a batch that’s been in the works for nearly a year. Whiskey aged to perfection and now finally ready to be bottled, labeled, and served.

“You really don’t know what you’re going to get until you put it in that barrel and it does it’s magic inside the barrel, and you have to taste it and some time would go by and it’s not ready yet, and you know come in here one day and had the eureka moment. The first barrel was ready, so we dumped it, put it in bottles, and that was a good day,” says Owner Tom Donner.

Not far from LA 1 lies Donner-Peltier Distillers in Thibodaux. It’s LA 1 that inspired the name behind their latest beverage. The 94-proof LA 1 Whiskey is created with corn, rye, barley, chocolate malt and Louisiana rice; whiskey that’s making history.

“There are a lot of Cajuns that are doing things in their garages that might not be the most legal thing in the world, but as far as we know we’re the first legal, aged, whiskey made in Louisiana since prohibition,” explains Donner.

Ironically this is not Donner’s only job. He’s actually a full time neurosurgeon.

“I do surgeries, yes! I did one this morning,” says Donner.

A bottle of LA 1 Whiskey sells for $45. Tor now you’ll have to plan a trip to Thibodaux to snag one.

Donner-Peltier Distillers is open Monday through Saturday. They offer tours and tastings.

Donner hopes to have a significant amount of LA 1 available in stores across the state by Christmas. The distillery also bottles and sells Rum, Vodka and Gin.
