There is nothing like it in America. St. Charles avenue with its million dollars homes, majestic oak trees, and the oldest continuously operating street car
system in the world.
And yesterday, lots of Saints and Green Bay packer fans trying to use the streetcar to get to the game. Problem was, too many fans and not enough streetcars.
The normal operation of the streetcar is on 30 minute intervals, or 15 minutes during peak hours. I'd call a Sunday night Saints game ultra peak hours and the streetcars weren't ready.
Instead of having all cars available to meet the demand, the RTA simply ran their usual Sunday schedule. Packed cars, packed streetcar stops, folks having to wait and be inconvenienced when the opposite should have been true.
The RTA is always concerned about lower ridership lately, especially post-Katrina. Yesterday, the system had all the riders it could want. Too bad the RTA wasn't prepared to handle it.
