MADISONVILLE, LA (WGNO) – Let the races begin! The annual Dragon Boat Festival kicked off Saturday morning to a great start. Hundreds of people as far as Puerto Rico and Canada came to the small town of Madisonville, Louisiana to participate in the Dragon Boat races.
The boats came from China and stretch about 41 feet long. Each boat has a dragon head in the front and a dragon tail in the back and can seat 20 peddlers. Peddlers paddled in unison with the drum that’s struck at the head of the boat. Teams of men and women compete in a 500-meter race on the Tcheduncte River just off the coast of Lake Ponchartrain. Most of the proceeds benefit the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and the St. Tammany Parish hospital.
