Cheddar is better only when it’s ‘Better Cheddar’ at Langenstein’s

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – It may be the world’s most famous chunk of cheese.

WGNO News with a Twist features reporter Wild Bill Wood has found it at Langenstein’s, New Orleans’ oldest independent grocery store.

Wild Bill wanders around the store showing shoppers a big chunk of this cheese.

Shoppers look at it and say, “It’s gorgeous! What is it?”

It’s the cheese named for the village in England where it originates. It’s cheddar cheese.

One man at Langenstein’s is making cheddar better every day.  It’s actually called Better Cheddar, and the man who’s making this happen is in the kitchen. His name is Chef Charles Scineaux.

Chef Charles takes cheddar cheese from Wisconsin.  He shreds it and adds mayo, garlic, walnuts, onions and some spices.

The end result is like a cheese ball.  But it’s served up in a box.

“Better cheddar was a recipe my uncle used to make for family gatherings,” Ellis Lanaux of Langenstein’s says.

Lanaux is the fifth generation of the same family that’s run Langenstein’s since 1922.

“It was one of the first things on the menu and it’s been a staple ever since,” Lanaux explains.
