NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — In New Orleans, Mayor LaToya Cantrell said Thursday that the city will start cleaning up garbage using the same city departments it uses for cleaning up after Mardi Gras parades.

She calls it “Operation: Mardi Gras.”

“It’s also collecting and gathering our multiple assets Mosquito, DPW, Sanitation,” Cantrell explained. “A comprehensive program. It’s the same thing to deal with this trash situation.”

The mayor also defended her decision to let people take their trash themselves to the city site on Elysian Fields. She said the city has signed emergency contracts with garbage collection companies Ramelli and IV Waste, but she says the city needs even more help than that.
