NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)–For more than twenty years, August 13 has been set aside as International Left-Handers Day.

According to the self-declared official website, the day was first celebrated in the 1990s.

Ask a lefty:  It’s not easy living in a world made for the dexterous.  The words ‘sinister’ and ‘gauche’ mean ‘left’ in Latin and French, respectively, and they’ve taken on less-than-favorable connotations ever since.   And we’ve all known, or at least heard of, school teachers who refuse to allow students to use their naturally dominant left hand.

Some studies even go so far as to suggest the left-handed are naturally predisposed to earlier deaths.

Scissors, can openers, one’s placement at the dinner table, and smeared handwriting (not to mention ink on your hand) are just some of the many complaints lefties have about the world around them.

But, some of the world’s best and brightest are proud lefties:  Several presidents, including  Ford, Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Clinton, and Obama are all lefties.   The sports and music worlds have all seen a long line of left-handed luminaries.

If only they made school desks for everyone.
