METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) – If you’re in a hurry, the Munholland United Methodist Church in Old Metairie is offering drive-thru ashes!

They say it’s a way for people to participate in the tradition who have no church they regularly go to, don’t have time for traditional service or have mobility challenges.

All you have to do is go to their parking lot on Metairie Road.  They’re offering the service from 7:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Lent in a bag

You can also get “ashes to go” at the Christ Episcopal Church in Slidell. All you have to do is drive or walk up and they’ll give you ashes and a prayer.

This year, the church will also be handing out “Lent in a bag” with a devotional item inside.

They’ll be outside from 8:30 until 11:00 a.m. and then again from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Ash Wednesday

Thousands are heading to church for Ash Wednesday, where they will be marked with ashes on their foreheads. The ashes are made from last year’s Palm Sunday fronds and are a sign of repentance.

Archbishop Gregory Aymond will be presiding over mass at the Saint Louis Cathedral at noon. Another service will be held there at 5:00 p.m.
