Chris Welty joined the WGNO news team in November 2020.
New Orleans-born and Lafayette-raised, in 2012, Chris graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications with a focus on broadcasting and a minor in political science.
Chris began his career in Lafayette, where he worked as a weekend videographer and associate producer at KLFY TV-10. In 2010, Chris joined the KATC TV-3 news team as a weekend editor, web producer, and videographer. Within six months, he transitioned from behind the scenes to an on-camera role as a multimedia journalist. In 2013, Chris moved from the news industry to become UL Lafayette’s multimedia specialist. Chris championed multimedia storytelling to build the University’s reputation locally, nationally and internationally. As an avid storyteller, Chris could not stay away from the news industry. In 2016, he helped launch the Lafayette-based FOX/NBC affiliate as a weekend anchor and reporter. In less than a year, he was promoted to news director. Most recently, Chris moved back to KATC in 2018 and returned to the field as a reporter.
Chris’s notable newsroom experience is riding out and covering Hurricane Laura from Lake Charles and other extreme weather events, multiple presidential and vice-presidential visits, civil unrest, and an investigation into missing public records allegedly deleted by a mayor.
Outside of work, Chris enjoys exploring new brunch spots with his wife Taylor and hanging out with their golden retriever, Luna.
