MATHEWS, La. – The Nicholls State University men’s golf team not only took on the LaTour Golf Course for 36 holes for the first time, but the Colonels had to battle through cold, rainy, and windy weather and ended up meeting the challenge by knocking off nine strokes from its first-round score Monday in the LaTour Intercollegiate. With the temperature in the upper 40s and the wind howling at nearly 20 miles per hour, Nicholls scored a 307 in Monday’s opening round before shooting a 296 in the second. With a 603, the Colonels placed seventh out of 12 teams. Nicholls was not the only team to benefit from the improved conditions as 10 of the other 11 squads in the intercollegiate had lower scores in the second round. The exception was Stephen F. Austin, which dropped from first place after 18 holes with a 294, to fourth after carding a 295.

The Colonels were paced by freshman Ben Baker, who was one of five golfers on the day to record an eagle. He shot a 1-over 73 in the opening round and finished with a 75 in the second, tying for 18th overall. Sophomore Connor Campbell shot a 1-under 71 in the second round, making three birdies versus just two bogeys. He had an eight-stroke improvement from his first 18 holes. Jack Lee was a stroke behind Campbell at the end of the day with a 150. He started with a 76 and sank an eagle on his final hole to card a 2-over 74. Baker Stevenson and Loic Maigret also saw better scores in the second go-around. Stevenson went from 80 to 76 while Maigret also shot 4-over after firing an 82.

For the individuals, Warut Wongrungroj put together an outstanding second round, shooting the lowest score for Nicholls with a 2-under 70. He totaled a 149 on the day and was followed by Liam Bryden (82-75–157) and Zachary Barrios (79-80–159). UTRGV, last year’s intercollegiate champion, heads into Tuesday’s final round in first after shooting 295-286–581.  For the individual leaderboard, Samford’s Harlan Winn is in first place at 4-under for the day. A total of six golfers shot under par on Monday.
