SLIDELL, La. – A 17-month-old girl died this afternoon after she was struck by a large box truck in a Slidell neighborhood.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Daniel Seuzeneau said the toddler, Koreyan Kirsh, ran into the street near the intersection of E. Forest and Timbers drive about 3:40 p.m. The driver of the box truck, a 21-year-old man, is not facing charges at this time.

Witnesses told deputies that the toddler ran into the road. Speed and reckless driving are not believed to be factors in the fatal accident.

“Obviously this is a very tragic situation,” Seuzeneau said. “This is something that nobody wants to see. We have a family that’s grieving tonight.”

A reporter at the press conference asked Seuzeneau whether the driver left the scene, as some witnesses had said.

Seuzeneau said the driver left the scene because he was so shaken up and there was a lot of chaos with the toddler’s family. He traveled about a block down the road and called police immediately. He stayed there until police arrived.

The investigation is ongoing.
