I-55 South Shut down because of Inmate transport bus crash

PONCHATOULA, LA.- A transport bus carrying 16 inmates bound for The Orleans Parish Prison has crashed, causing I-55 Southbound at the Ponchatoula exit to be closed.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office released an update just after 9 a.m.

None of the inmates or the prison staff on board the bus were injured in the accident, according to the OPSO, but everyone involved will receive attention from medical staff when they return to the jail.

The prisoners were transferred to a prison bus on loan from the East Carroll Parish Jail, and that bus is expected to arrive in New Orleans at 11 a.m., according to the OPSO.
