HARVEY, La. (WGNO) – The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in the shooting death of 10-month-old Xy’ahar Davis.

Jonathan Manual, 27, of Harvey, has been booked into the Jefferson Parish Jail for first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. He has a lengthy criminal history.

The shooting happened Dec. 3. Ten-month-old Davis was shot and killed inside his home on Caddy Drive in Marrero.

A 16-year-old male was also shot and wounded. He has since been released from University Hospital.

JPSO investigators were able to use fingerprints from the scene to link Manual to the shooting. Detectives are still looking for a second shooter.

Manual was arrested Tuesday after detectives saw him leaving his home in an SUV. He was arrested in the 2000 block of Woodmere Boulevard without incident. One of the passengers in the vehicle told investigators that Manual had passed her a .40-caliber handgun to hide as deputies approached the vehicle.

The baby’s father, Xevion Davis, was there when the shooting happened, but has been reluctant to speak to investigators, Sheriff Newell Normand said. Initially, he told detectives that he was in the back of the house when the shooting occurred, but later admitted to being there when his son was shot and killed.

Normand said it’s too early to say the motive of the shooting. At an afternoon press conference, he called the crime a tragedy.

Manual’s arrest record includes multiple drug charges, including possession of crack-cocaine and marijuana, cruelty to a juvenile and illegal carrying of weapons.

He has denied involvement in the shooting, Normand said, and promptly asked for an attorney.
