Pedestrian struck and killed in Treme overnight

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A 50-year-old man was struck by a car and killed in Treme last night.

According to the NOPD, the man was attempting to cross Basin Street at St. Peter Street when a 2007 Toyota Avalon struck him.

The unidentified man died on his way to the hospital.

The driver of the Toyota remained on the scene and was taken to the DWI Testing Facility for a toxicology test. He passed and was released without being cited, according to the NOPD.

A witness who was driving lakebound in the right lane of Basin told police he saw the victim, who was wearing all black clothing, crossing the street at the last minute, and was able to avoid the pedestrian.

The driver of the Toyota was unable to avoid striking the man. The investigation is ongoing but no charges are expected at this time, according to the NOPD.
