NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Off-kilter criminal Harley Quinn is trending as the top costume for Halloween 2016, according to Google’s Frightgeist trend-watching service.

Just below the fishnet wearing and baseball bat wielding Quinn costume ranks her comic book villain boyfriend, the Joker.

With the recent movie adaptation of Suicide Squad featuring Margot Robbie as Quinn and Jared Leto as the Joker, ultra-violent couples costume ideas are easy to come by this year with the top two choices.

Generic “superhero” and “pirate” costumes take the third and fourth most trending positions, while Wonder Woman rounds out the top five.

Locally, the top five trending costumes list varies only slightly from the national rankings, with “superhero” displacing the Joker for second place, and “mermaid” taking the fourth spot.

Also benefiting from a recent big-screen adaptation, Wonder Woman remains the number five trending costume both locally and nationally.

The much-maligned clown costume holds steady nationally at number nine, between Star Wars at eight and “dinosaur” at 10. Just don’t dress up like a clown in Mississippi.

Perhaps buoyed by the resurgence of The Walking Dead, zombie costumes crack the top 20, and everyone’s favorite “merc with a mouth” Deadpool lands at number 15.

Farther down the list, “1980s” ranks 44, “steampunk” comes in at 48, and “cowboy” is the 50th most trending costume of the year.

For those who have not chosen a costume yet, cowboy is a solid bet if you want to stand out, or you could go the other direction and lose yourself in a sea of Harley Quinns and Jokers.

Which costume idea will you choose?
