NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The NOPD is still investigating a Sunday night shooting in Central City that left five injured and one dead.

Police Superintendent Michael Harrison said at a press conference Friday morning that the Crimestoppers reward has increased to $5,000.

Earnest McKnight, 63, was shot in the head at First and Derbigny streets and died later at the hospital. The other five victims, a woman and four men, are expected to be okay.

Investigators said they believe the suspect or suspects had only one target, but struck several bystanders.

Friday, Harrison called it a tragic incident and said from all accounts taken so far, McKnight lost his life and had “nothing to do with this.”

The NOPD has a special operations team, gang crimes unit and more assigned to the case.

Harrison said the shooting might be connected to other violence in Central City over the past few weeks. He admitted that the information he was giving out was limited. He said he wanted more witnesses to come forward before he would release suspect descriptions.

He said they have already received tips, but if you know anything contact Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
