BUSH, La. (WGNO) – It was a tragic Labor Day weekend for a family in Bush.

A 3-year-old girl drowned in her family’s pool Sunday morning.

According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the 82000 block of Highway 21, where family members said they found their 3-year-old daughter unresponsive in the swimming pool.

The toddler’s mother told deputies that the 3-year-old was in the living room watching television and playing. The mother walked away for a few minutes, and when she returned, the toddler was nowhere to be found.

After frantically searching the house, another family member discovered the toddler unresponsive in the swimming pool. The mother started CPR until emergency crews from Fire District #9 and Acadian Ambulance arrived.

The toddler was airlifted to Bogalusa Charity Hospital. Despite desperate attempts to restore life to the child, doctors pronounced her deceased shortly after arriving at the hospital.

“This is any parent’s worst nightmare,” St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith said. “Whenever a young child is involved in a tragic accident, it really hits home and affects everyone involved. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. We hope they find comfort during this heartbreaking time.”

The names of those involved are not being released. The family has requested privacy.
