KENNER, La. (WGNO) – A woman and her dog died this morning in a house fire in Kenner.

Firefighters responded early this morning to a fire in the 3700 block of Loyola Avenue.

The home had no smoke detectors, according to the fire chief.

Brant Thompson, deputy state fire marshal, said the fire happened just after 8 a.m. It started in the living area of the home.

The victim hasn’t been positively identified, but 43-year-old Sherrie Stevens lived there alone, he said. An autopsy is pending to confirm that Stevens is the woman who died in the fire.

Neighbors called to report the fire. Several tried to rescue her, but they were unsuccessful, Thompson said.
