NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - News with a Twist teaching doctor, Dr. Rachel, went through her mail bag this week and answered your questions on medical marijuana and fertility.

One Dr. Rachel fan asked about the pill form of medical marijuana called Marinol.

“I am currently undergoing chemotherapy for cancer,” the viewer writes. “My doctor has given me medical marijuana called Marinol which has really helped my appetite and allowed me to eat almost like normal. Recently my cancer support group went to Colorado so I tried smoking their medical marijuana.  My lungs burned when the smoke hit them. I coughed so much that I got a sore throat and headache. I felt so horrible. Is Marinol better medical marijuana than smoking it?”

The answer: Yes.

“For those viewers who do not know this, medical marijuana has been around for years. It is called Marinol. Marinol is a pill that contains 100% THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.  So yes the pill is better for you because you are not inhaling all the toxic fumes of the cigarette. Stick with your Marinol.”

Dr. Rachel dug into her email bag again and answered this question from a viewer about fertility:

“Is it true that my best chance of having a boy is to have relations around the time of ovulation?”

Again, Dr. Rachel says the answer is yes.

“Yes you are correct. The sex of the baby is determined by which sperm fertilizes the egg. If a Y sperm fertilizes the egg then the baby will be a boy. If a X sperm fertilizes the egg then the baby will be a girl.  The Y sperm moves faster than the X but does not live as long as the X sperm so if you want a boy, there is a little higher chance if you have relations at the time the egg is released.”

Dr. Rachel loves getting your emails!
