Destrehan High School student shot and killed, suspect in custody

NEW SARPY, La. (WGNO) - The St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Department is investigating the shooting death of a Destrehan High School student.

He has been identified as 17-year-old Kendall Williams Jr.

Deputies say Williams was shot and killed by Javon D. Wells shortly before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators found Williams' body in a small park at East Harding and 8th streets.

He had been shot in the head.

Several hours after the shooting deputies arrested Javon Wells and booked him on one charge of second-degree murder.

Wells is currently being held at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center.

The St. Charles Parish school system has released a statement about Williams' death.

The statement reads as follows:

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of a Destrehan High School senior who was shot and killed last night. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the students and staff at Destrehan High School and our community. Support is being provided for students and staff in accordance with the district's crisis management and emergency response plan. In addition to school counselors who are on site daily, additional support staff members are at the high school to assist students and staff."
