HOUMA, La. (WGNO) - Philip Toups calls Houma an "epicenter." You're 45 minutes to the international airport and about an hour to New Orleans.

"I've created a nice life for myself here. I feel like I'm in the middle of it all," says Houma resident Philip Toups.

Plus, Houma is affordable.

A recent study with personal finance online publisher moneygeek.com ranked Houma number eight out of 40 U.S. cities when it comes to cost of living.

The study was based on cities with a population of less than 100,000 people on a score computed from average salaries.

"I was looking in New Orleans but when I was offered a job in Houma at a comparable salary and I looked at the cost of living, how I could buy a house here for roughly half the price, and do business here much more affordably, it was a no brainer," says Toups.

And besides getting more bang for your buck Toups says Houma, the city in and of itself, has had a lasting impact on him as well.

"I love to be outside and I love to cook and I love to entertain and everything I was looking for; family, community, location and culture, was here,” says Toups.
