NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)- With a big voice, and a bubbly personality to match a beautiful smile, Tonya Boyd-Cannon is among the city's most powerful vocalists.
Tonya told us that she can't remember a time when she didn't sing, but her aspiration to star on stage began to take shape while working with another great New Orleans singer.
Says Boyd-Cannon, "It wasn't until I began to sing background for Jean Knight 'Don't Mess With My Toot Toot' and every since then I've always wanted to be on stage. I've always wanted to see the smiles and joy on the crowd's face, and between Ms. Jean giving me that inspiration, I've always been inspired since then."
She's gone on to perform regularly at a host of festivals, in commercials, opened for national artists, and even released her own recordings.
2015 was an incredible year for Tonya Boyd-Cannon, culminating with a great run in the competition on NBC's The Voice.
"The Voice, The Voice, The Voice was an amazing experience. I mean to work with the coaches, the staff, everyone from the front of the house to the back of the house, was an amazing opportunity to be able to share my voice with the world on a nation-wide platform. I mean who wouldn't love that?", recalled Boyd-Cannon.
Tonya's a mom and wife to New Orleans tuba man John Cannon, and in her day job she's a 3rd grade social studies and science teacher. It's something she's passionate about, but as a performer can also present it's comical moments.
Boyd-Cannon says, "I love it because my students, I try not to bring my "celebrity status" in which I never do, but they say 'I Googled you' and I say OK, let's get back to the Louisiana Purchase."
2016 is also off to a great start for Tonya Boyd-Cannon with the release of her new CD Muzik is Life.
"This baby has been brewing for 6 years and I began writing and performing a lot of the music about 3 years ago. This is a soul inspiring album and I'd just like to continue inspire people that music is life," according to Boyd-Cannon.
