NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)-  We know you've heard the song..."The Mardi Gras Mambo" blaring from speakers everywhere, especially this time of year.

Have you ever wondered the story behind the song?

Is it just a song?  Is it a dance?

News with a Twist's Kenny Lopez got the scoop from David Kunian of WWOZ FM on what exactly is the "Mardi Gras Mambo"?

According to Kunian, the song is just a song, and not a dance.  He said that the song is actually a rumba and not a mambo.

"Mardi Gras rumba, mardi gras rumba, doesn't quite sound right,"  Kunian said.

What makes it a rumba is the rhythms and calypso beats, which are different than a mambo!

The original "Mardi Gras Mambo" was recorded as a country song by singer, Jodie Levens back in 1953.  The Hawketts' version made the song mega-popular.  They recorded it in 1954.
