NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - Whether you prefer filled or unfilled, we are used to seeing these sweet treats topped with sugar or icing, but king cake season's getting complicated. Introducing the savory side to king cake! From the over-indulgent king cake burger from Food Drunk Nola, to king cake French fries from New Orleans-based food blogger Glazed and Confused. Now we have the boudin stuffed king cake.
"I decided to give it a try here about a week ago and they caught on from there. We've sold about five or six hundred of these miniature king cakes in a week,” says owner and chef at Cake Café. He credits a chef from Lafayette for the idea after seeing a picture on a social media site.
“We start with a little bit of bacon, we use boudin out of the casing, wrap it in our sweet dough and bake it off. It's really that simple. you know it really works, I wouldn't just make it or put so much time into it just because it sold. When we tasted it, it was as if we went 'wow!"
Consumers said the same thing! The crispy bacon and golden syrup seduces king cake connoisseurs of all kinds, but especially those who think outside the box.
"So it's someone who's more adventuresome and wants to try new flavors, try new things. They're a good novelty, a good thing to try, a lot of people may not like sweets at a party but they may like the boudin. It's just fun and we don't take orders for them, we're telling people to get here early."
