NEW ORLEANS EAST (WGNO) - Five men were rushed to the hospital following a shooting in New Orleans East.
It happened in the 6700 block of Chef Menteur Highway.
"It was a barrage of bullets man, I'm talking they was shooting on both sides of the street," neighbor Michael Johnson recounted.
Crime scene investigator fanned out near the intersection of Dale and Chef Mentor Highway. It was the scene of what neighbors described as an all out shooting.
"I just seen shooting I guess they weren't shooting at nobody in particular I guess they were shooting at anybody who was out here both sides of the street it was just bullets everywhere dude."
It happened just after 8 o'clock Monday night near the Tex Mart gas station. Neighbors say it's an area known for drug activity.
"It's too much going on right here," neighbor Catina Gyles said.
"You can't even go to the store and get gas these days you know?" Johnson added.
Police say five men were injured in the shooting; three of them drove themselves to the hospital, two others were taken by ambulance.
"I feel for their family. I hope they survive there okay," Johnson said.
As detectives worked in and around the crime tape searching for clues into what happened and why, neighbors became filled with frustration about the area that's becoming an increasingly dangerous place to live.
"You might as well say it's the wild wild east. Yes indeed, you can't even go to the store and get gas nowadays you know," Johnson repeated.
Police are still looking into a motive for the shooting. They have not released the names of the victims, nor details about their varying degrees of injuries.
