NOPD: Gas Truck Explosion Closes I-10 in New Orleans

Update: The Interstate west bound is now open. The east bound side remains closed until further notice. 

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A major fire caused by a tanker truck explosion has closed Interstate 10 at Interstate 510, a New Orleans police spokesman said.

Westbound traffic is being diverted off the interstate at the Michoud Blvd exit and eastbound traffic is being diverted at Lake Forest/ Chalmette Exit.

The fuel truck overturned shortly after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

NOPD officials say a 24-year-old truck driver was taken to a local hospital, but her injuries were not serious.

Members of the NOFD/ Hazmat is on the scene for clean up of the wreckage.

Members of NOFD/NOPD/EMS will brief media on the scene momentarily.
