(WGNO) – Lorenzo Maggiore has a big painting in his Los Angeles area office.  He is the artist, and it’s his own work.  But now Maggiore is finding a real following thanks to his time with guns.

“It’s kind of been stuck with me a long time.  When I was a kid, I put sand down the barrel of a BB gun and would shoot flies,” he told WGNO’s Curt Sprang during a Skype interview.  “And then it just translated into salt so you could shoot it around food.”

Maggiore is learning what it’s like to begin with a dream and a shoestring budget and go on to create what is quickly becoming a multimillion dollar business.  He designed a gun that can be used to shoot down flies.  The gun uses normal table salt for ammunition.

The gun is called Bug-A-Salt.  Maggiore created a video that showed the gun in action and used it as part of a crowd funding campaign on the website Indiegogo.  He hoped to get about $15,000.  Instead, he ended up with nearly $600,000.

“Word is squeaking out about the product too, so it just gets crazier and crazier every day,” Maggiore says of  his company’s growing success.
