SLIDELL, La. (WGNO) – A woman and her miniature collie were attacked by two pit bulls Wednesday morning as they walked on a trail near Slidell, officials with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s office said.

According to the victim two pit bulls approached her and began to bite her dog near Hunters Point Road in the Belair subdivision.

She told police she attempted to stop the attack, and that’s when the dogs turned on her.

Officials said a neighbor heard the woman screaming and fired his 9mm pistol at the dogs. Both dogs were hit, one died at the scene.

The pit bulls were both owned by 20-year old Leonard Harvey of Slidell.

Harvey was issued a misdemeanor for violating the parish leash law.

According to authorities Harvey later made the decision to have the injured dog euthanized due to the extent of its injuries and fear that it may attack again.

The woman was transported to Slidell Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for bite wounds to her left arm and left leg.  Her dog was transported to a local veterinary clinic to be treated for its wounds.

Thank goodness for the quick actions of the neighbor. Glad both will be ok! The neighbor is a hero. Glad that both pits can no longer attack.
